ECOC 2007 - Fast measurement of local PMD with high spatial resolution using stimulated Brillouin scattering

Omnisens together with the EPFL Swiss Federal Institute of Technology are presenting a paper at the ECOC’07 Conference in Berlin from the September 16 to September 20, 2007 in Berlin, Germany.

The paper is entitled “Fast measurement of local PMD with high spatial resolution using stimulated Brillouin scattering” (paper 10.1.2). The paper will be presented by Luc Thevenaz from the EPFL and was prepared by Luc Tevenaz, Stella Foaleng Mafang, EPFL Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Switzerland; Marc Nikles, Omnisens SA, Switzerland. The paper describes the possibility to map the evolution of the beat length in an optical fiber using stumlated Brillouin scattering and its application to distributed PMD measurements.

Local beat length with a 21.5cm spatial resolution is measured in one second along a single mode fibre using the polarisation dependence of stimulated Brillouin scattering, in a non-destructive and simple way.
